2017 Recap

HAPPY NEW YEAR! What a year. 2017 had some of my best moments (getting into college), but it also had many many many awful moments. I found out the people who really care about me, I got rid of toxic friendships and stupid boys (haha) as well as worked on bettering myself and focusing on my happiness.

In this post, I wanted to share the major events that occurred this year and what I learned from it.

January: I had been "with" this guy for a few months, and in January he just completely dropped me. No explanation. This hurt so much especially since I had to see him every day in school. I learned that you cannot put your happiness in someone else's hands, and that everything is temporary. Now you might be thinking, "wow Jordan, you weren't even dating him". Yes, I know. But it still hurt because I was used to talking to him every day for 4 months. And being dropped (he literally just stopped responding to me) is never fun.

February: I broke my knee! This kinda requires no explanation. I was on crutches for 3 months, and I am still not 100% (i.e. I can't run on the ground). I experienced what it was like to have to rely on other people for help. This experience was life changing because I learned how to help myself when I wasn't at my best, but, more importantly, I learned that it is okay to get help. I needed help with basic things and that made it much easier for me to ask for help when I was struggling.

March: In March, I lost my best friend. We had been on shaky ground since last November, but in March we actually stopped talking. Although it hurt, and I was sad, it was something that needed to happen. I had just completely lost trust in her and she started treating me like absolute shit. Since she was my best friend since 7th grade, this was a major change in my life. I learned that just because someone has been in your life for a long time it doesn't mean they are meant to be in you life forever. People's actions are MUCH more important than their words. Put your happiness and well-being first, and if someone does not have your best interest in mind, stop being friends with them. Don't put yourself in a position to get hurt again.

April: In April, I started seeing a new therapist. For many reasons I had to switch. I finally found someone who I can trust with absolutely anything and who has my best interest in mind. I learned that if someone really cares about you, you will know. Never settle!

May: May was the month I prepared for my ACT. I spent hours practicing. I really lost hope. I wasn't doing as well as I had hoped, and I didn't think I could achieve my goal. In addition, I was still on crutches and hopping around. Once I was able to walk, I had to dedicate a lot of time to PT to make sure I was building up strength in my legs again. It was a long process.

June: June was the month I took the ACT. I had to sit for a long test and hope for the best. I learned that if I believe in myself, I can accomplish way more than I think. The one thing that got me through the ACT was power posing. 2x during the test and once before, I went to the bathroom and stood in a power pose (arms above my head, feet spread out) for 2 minutes. This internally builds confidence and I am positive it is what got me through the test. Try it out!

July: July was the first month I was completely alone. Like I stayed at home alone for a whole week. Which doesn't seem like a lot, but as a high school student who lives with her parents, this was a big step. I had to cook dinner every night and learn time management skills!

August: Woah, August. In August I lost my other best friend. After accidentally telling him I liked him, he completely stopped talking to me. This was another really hard month. I was heartbroken, but  I learned he didn't really care about me as a friend.

September: I started my senior year of high school! I learned that first semester of senior year is not easy. Teachers don't go easy on you and you have all your college apps as well! Yay school.

October: In October I had one of my first family reunions. I had so much fun with all of my cousins just hanging around Chicago. I remembered how important and amazing family is, and how I need to cherish the moments we have together because they don't last long.

November: November was a big month. This was the month early college apps were due. I was pretty good on time management, but a number of my friends were. I spent a lot of time working with my friends and encouraging them. I learned that sometimes your words can have huge positive impacts on your friends!

December: December was the month I got into university. Of course, I was thrilled. But, a number of my friends got rejected from their early choices. I had to learn how to be happy for myself while still able to talk to and console my friends who needed it. I also took time for myself. I got my wisdom teeth out, and decided to take a few extra days off of school. I needed time to just relax and recharge which was tremendously helpful.

What a year. This year was filled with so many other things that I wasn't able to share. If the time is right, and I feel like my story can benefit you guys, I will share it with you.

Thank you so much for reading and for supporting us for another year. It really means the world to Sam and me!

Wishing you all the best in 2018.
