Preventing Foot Blisters

As a dancer, I end up with a ton of blisters on my feet. I've also been running a lot more, and trust me, it's not helping. Even though this may be a little more "a little late than never" for me, I thought I would share a few tips for how to prevent blisters on your feet!

  • Break Your Shoes In - New shoes are one of the biggest causes for painful blisters. Before wearing new shoes for any extended period of time, I recommend breaking them in a little at a time. Wearing them around your house or as you run an errand or two will definitely have your feet thanking you.
  • Wear Socks - Wearing socks whenever possible is another amazing way to prevent blisters. Socks will help stop the inside of your shoes from rubbing against your heel or the side of your foot.
  • Find The Right Fit - Wearing shoes that actually fit your feet is essential. Make sure that you have enough space for your toes (i.e. they're not pushing up against the front), but also that they're not too big causing your foot to slide around.
  • Keep Your Feet Dry - If you work out a lot (or just have extremely sweaty feet), make sure you're either changing your socks or doing everything you can to keep your feet dry. Corn starch or baby powder should do the trick.
  • Readjust When Necessary - As soon as you feel your shoes pinching your feet or the very beginning part of a blister, readjust your shoes. If possible, take them off right away. If not, move your socks or retie your shoes.
  • Try Tape? - According to NYTimes, wrapping your feet in paper tape can help you avoid blisters! It's super inexpensive and can be found at almost any drugstore.
  • Treat Blisters Right Away - As soon as a blister pops up, deal with it. Apply blister cream, padding if necessary, and a bandage (soft moleskin ones work wonders). Also avoid popping them, it can make it ever more painful or even lead to infection.
So, these are some of my tips for helping you guys guys avoid blisters! Let me know if you have any other tips! I'm sure we'd all love to hear them!

XOXO,

Samantha
