The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

The life changing magic of, wait what? Yes, you did read that right, Tidying Up. But honestly if you haven’t heard of this book already, you may as well be living under a rock.

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo is a book about, well, tidying up. But more than just putting things away, this book teaches you to actually find out which objects spark joy and cherish them.

This book, to a certain extent, changed my perspective on the stuff I have and why I keep it. It made me look at some of my things and think ‘what the hell is this and why do I have it?’. It also made me look at some things and be like ‘OMG I’ve been looking for this, I love this’. But overwhelmingly, it made me think ‘I don’t know, does this spark?’. And then I would start to second guess every other decision I had made. Kondo says that it’s a gut feeling, but I can’t help but feeling like I’m wrong and I will actually miss whatever the object in question is. I find it impossible to decide to get rid of multiple bags of garbage and then actually follow through and get rid of it. I just keep deciding to keep things and then also acquiring more things. So does this make me materialistic and petty? I hope not, because I feel like this is what many people must be feeling as they embark on their journey of tidying up. I, along with I’m sure many others, want to declutter but hold back from doing a full-on purge as Kondo says we must. So as much as I want to get in on the KonMari method of tidying up, I really just don’t think it’s for me. I will however, continue trying her method, because I desperately want it to work for me.

So, was it life changing? No.
A good read that did make me look at my stuff differently? Absolutely.

So did you buy into the hype? Did the KonMari method work for you? Let me know in the comments down below and I’ll be sure to get back to you!
