The Vacationers Review

Hey guys!

Today I have a pretty summer-y book review for you guys. This is the perfect book for lying on beach in the hot sun…. or for those of us not lucky enough to be living in Australia/The Caribbean/Hawaii….. it’s the perfect book to read and imagine all of that.

The Vacationers by Emma Straub follows the Post family on their two week vacation to Mallorca, Spain. But just like any vacation, this one does not go as planned. Except this time, it’s a little more than just lost luggage and delayed planes. As secrets are let out, lies are told, and relationships are ruined, this idyllic island vacation takes a turn for the worse.

The Post family arrives in Mallorca troubled for various reasons. Sylvia, the youngest, is about to leave for college and Bobby, her older brother, is dating a women 10 years older than him. Franny and Jim’s marriage is holding on by a thread and Lawrence and Charles debate taking the next step in their relationship. The house they rent together is filled with mismatched people - creating a hysterical scene with every interaction.

The book starts off slowly but as the story continues it picks up a little bit. The characters are a little shallow and a little predictable but as the story goes on you become invested in their outcomes. But the description of Mallorca, OMG I wanted to pack up my bags and go there right away.  I’m not going to lie, this is not the next great work of fiction. But for an easy beach (or living room) read, it’s the perfect choice. It’s funny and witty and the characters will either make you roll on the floor laughing or crying at their decisions.

So if you’re looking for a funny, light beach read, this book is a must. I def recommend it for anyone who likes a funny family drama with hysterical characters. Comment your thoughts down below along with any other books you think I should check out!!!
