Does Charcoal Really have any Benefits?

So I was recently in Sephora and at the drugstore and I was noticing a ton of cool products all containing charcoal. Which on one hands kind of strikes me and yuck, but on the other clearly if so many products use charcoal it must be beneficial. So I decided to do a little digging to find out. And what I found out is pretty cool.

Activated charcoal is charcoal that has added oxygen. The theory behind activated charcoal is that it will act like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt and oil. Pretty cool huh? This comes from the effect it has in emergency rooms where it helps people with alcohol poisoning or who overdosed by attaching to the toxins and absorbing them before the bloodstream can. Experts are now saying this theory isn’t crazy. They say that dirt and oil in your pores will stick to the charcoal and then get washed away when you wash off your face. Charcoal has been known to absorb up to 150x its weight in toxins. It can even be used to help whiten your teeth. However not all dermatologists are believing the hype. There is no actual scientific research done to prove (or disprove) this theory. So you let me know. What do you believe? Did it work for you? Let me know down in the comments along with what your favorite charcoal containing beauty products are.
